The Motorcyclist Who Found These Roads: Our Story, and Why It's an Experience, Not a Rental

    By Joshua Ford4 min read

I got my first four-wheeler at ten years old. I've been on motorcycles and powersports machinery pretty much nonstop since then. My family and I moved to Ennis when our son was one — we fell for the community and never left — and I started riding these exact back roads on a motorcycle over a decade ago, long before I ever thought about putting a fleet of Slingshots on them.

    The Ride That Started It

What sold me on the Slingshot itself wasn't a spec sheet — I rented one before I ever owned one. It was the steering. Stupidly responsive, almost twitchy in the best way, and the first time I really opened one up it felt less like driving a car and more like piloting a rally car. Add the engine vibration coming straight up through the frame and the wind actually hitting you — no windshield, no roof — and it's a different kind of adrenaline than anything else I've driven, motorcycles included. Put that feeling on roads I already knew and loved from a decade of riding them, and the business idea wrote itself.

    Why "Experience," Not "Rental"

A rental hands you keys and a deposit form. An experience means you get an orientation, a curated route, insurance already sorted, and no deposit at all. That distinction isn't marketing — it's a direct reaction to what I saw other Slingshot operators doing around DFW and Houston: deposits running $150 to $500, age gates as high as 25, approval processes that feel like you're applying for a loan to drive a vehicle for an hour. I stripped all of that out on purpose.

    Why Ennis

Ennis isn't a marketing backdrop I picked — it's the official Bluebonnet City of Texas, a designation the state legislature made in 1997, and it's home to 40-plus miles of trails the Ennis Garden Club has mapped and maintained since 1951. That's not something I can claim for my business; it's something the town already earned, decades before I showed up. What I can tell you firsthand: for most of the year, Ennis is just a small town going about its business. Then bluebonnet season hits, and the place genuinely opens up — people drive in from all over Texas, and some from well outside it, just to see what we get to look at every April. I go into the full history of the trails themselves in a separate post if you want it.

What We Strip Out (and Why)

    • No deposit — you're not financing your own rental
    • Insurance included with every booking
    • No motorcycle license required (Tex. Transp. Code §521.085(b))
    • Insurance approval usually clears within 24 hours of booking
    • Free rescheduling up to 7 days out, subject to availability

Why I Ride With My Own Kids in a Slingshot

I ride with my own kids in a Slingshot a lot, and I wouldn't put them on a motorcycle. Seat belts, side-by-side seating, the roll hoop behind us — they get the same wind-in-the-hair, engine-in-your-chest thrill I fell for, without the specific risks that come with two wheels and no belt. That's not a sales pitch, it's the actual reason I trust this vehicle around my own family.

What Hasn't Changed Since Season One

I've built a handful of businesses at this point, mostly national or online — HIPAA-compliant software, web design, SEO work. This is the first one where I get to watch people have fun in real time, in my own town, in person. We took real bookings through the 2026 season — including at least one birthday and one anniversary that I know of — and honestly, that part hasn't gotten old. The fleet is still two Slingshots, capping a group at four riders at a time. I'd rather keep it that small and run every orientation myself than hand it off before I trust the process completely.

    The Safety-First Approach

Every renter gets a real orientation and safety briefing before they touch the trails — not a waiver you skim and sign, an actual walkthrough. I've written up the full minute-by-minute version of what that looks like in a separate post once it's live. I run it personally because it's the one part of this business I don't trust to a script.

    What's Next

The goal for 2027 is straightforward: book out every available April day. Beyond that, I'm testing ideas — a golden-hour date-night package, gift cards, group convoy bookings — and I'm calling them tests, not promises, because I'd rather under-promise here than announce something before it's real.
