The State Fair of Texas is running now through October 18 — if you haven't been yet this season, this week's a good window before the last-weekend crowds. If you're the motorsport type, the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals lands at Texas Motorplex October 14–18; read the full weekend guide if that's more your speed than the Fair.

Standing Weekend Attractions (Always Open)

The Dallas Arboretum, Klyde Warren Park, Deep Ellum, and the Bishop Arts District all deliver regardless of what week it is — check current hours and admission before you go, since those change. Dallas's museum scene (the Perot, the DMA, the Sixth Floor Museum) rounds out the standard weekend rotation.

Free Things to Do in Dallas This Weekend

Klyde Warren Park doesn't charge admission. Most museums run a free day at least once a month — check each one's current schedule. Public art around Deep Ellum and the Dallas Arts District costs nothing but a walk.

Best for Couples

Best for Families

Klyde Warren Park's regular kids' programming, the Perot Museum, and the Dallas Zoo are the standing family picks any weekend of the year. Check each one's current weekend event calendar before you go.

Within an Hour of Dallas — Worth the Drive

This is the section I actually care most about, because it's the one where I know the ground firsthand. Ennis, TX sits about 35 miles — roughly 37 minutes — south of downtown on I-45. Two reasons to make the drive depending on when you're reading this:

• April only: the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails, 40-plus miles of Ennis Garden Club-mapped roads through wildflower season, and my own Slingshot rides through them.
• Year-round: Texas Motorplex, the first all-concrete NHRA "super track," drawing 500,000-plus fans a year across a February–November season.

Also worth the drive: Waxahachie's historic courthouse square (about 15 miles from Ennis), and further out, the Fort Worth Stockyards for a different flavor of "worth leaving Dallas for."

Rainy-Day Backup Plan

Indoor museums, an escape room, or a matinee cover the rained-out weekend without much thought required.

Nightlife and Late-Night

Deep Ellum is Dallas's standing answer for adults who want their weekend to run past dinner — live music venues, bars, and late-night food all in walking distance of each other.
