Polaris Slingshot History: Every Model Year From 2015 to 2026

    By Joshua Ford2 min read

Polaris revealed the Slingshot in 2014 and launched it in 2015. The 2020 model year is the real dividing line — new engine, new transmission — and everything since has been trim expansion on that foundation.

    2014 — The Reveal

Polaris unveiled the Slingshot as a new category entirely — a three-wheeled autocycle rather than a car or a motorcycle.

2015 — Launch, Including in Texas

The Slingshot reached the market in 2015. That same year, Motorcycle.com covered its legalization in Texas specifically — the beginning of the autocycle classification that makes the current Ennis business model possible. See our Texas Slingshot laws guide for the full legal picture.

    2015–2019 — The GM 2.4L Ecotec Era

Early Slingshots ran a GM 2.4L Ecotec engine putting out 173 hp. If you're shopping used listings from this era, know you're looking at a meaningfully different powertrain than the current lineup.

2020 — The Redesign That Changed Everything

Polaris replaced the Ecotec with its own ProStar 2.0L inline-four and launched AutoDrive, a hydraulically actuated automated 5-speed — no clutch, no manual shifting. Per Polaris's own reporting, the company nearly doubled its May–September business after AutoDrive launched. This is the single biggest turning point in Slingshot history.

    2021–2025 — Trim Expansion

The lineup grew from there — S, SL, SLR, R, Signature Edition, and Grand Touring trims all built on the 2020 ProStar/AutoDrive foundation.

2023 — Texas Law Catches Up

SB 1115 amended the Texas autocycle helmet statute (Tex. Transp. Code §661.0015), effective September 1, 2023. See our full Texas laws breakdown for what changed.

2026 — Where the Lineup Stands Today

So, What Year Is the Best Slingshot to Buy?

2020 or newer is the practical line — that's when you get the ProStar engine and AutoDrive together. This is general guidance on what changed and why it matters, not personalized purchase advice. If you're not sure yet, try a current-generation Slingshot before you shop.
